Challenges

Challenges are based off of the current units, and daily work. Questions done for warm ups will most likely be on the final. Warm ups will be updated weekly. 

Challenge #1

  1. You have a Saw Stop table saw and realize that the machine is moisture sensetive. You need to store lumber year round. Your storage is "sealed" from environmental factors, outdoors. However, when you bring lumber into the shop to workwith it has a high moisture content. 

    • How will you dry out the lumber once you bring it in the shop? 

    • Is there a method to keep the lumber from drawing moisture in your outdoor storage? 

    • Why is it impoartant to understand lumber moisture content?

Challenge #2

​​

  1. For the Bench project you are required to make jigs. (You will need to order 2 sets of toggle clamps to complete the jig construction, found on Woodcraft.com.)

    1. How many jigs must you make?

    2. What type of materials will you use to contruct your jigs?

    3. What is the overall cost to construct all of the jigs? 

    4. Create a complete bill of materials for the jigs, print and staple to your answers. 

    5. How much will the bench project cost including the materials for the jigs?

Challenge #3

  1. You are going to make the benches in your own shop with 2 employees. Based on what you know from the bench project . . .

    • Estimate how many hours it will take to make the bench project according to your PODs

    • Based off of the previous challenge, you should know how many BF of lumber is needed to order for one bench, how many BF is need to make 10 benches?

    • Based off of your first question in how many work days, (Mon-Fri, 9 -5) could you make 1 bench?

    • How many days will it take to make 10 benches?

Challenge #4

  1. Obtain 3 different scholarship applications from the counseling office.

  2. Write a short (3 sentence) description of each. 
  3. List how much each will earn you, provided you are a recipient of those scholarships.

  1. You are given a budget of $3500. Out of that $3500 you need to repair 2 band saws, 1 lathe, order 1 set of forsner bits, and enough material for 3 small tables. Complete the following questions. 

    • A. the band saw repairs are ​

      • 8 bearings @ $19.10​ ea, 3 1/2 hours to repair bearings. 

      • 1 Upper wheel bearing @ $27.00 ea, 2 hours to repair

      • Shipping = $14.50

      • How much money will you spend on parts for the band saw?

    • B. The lathe parts

      • 1 live center rebuild kit = $90.87​

      • 1 Head stock bearing = $43.00 

      • Shipping = $12.00

      • 5 hours to replace bearing, 1 1/2 to rebuild the live center 

    • C. 1 Standard set of forsner bits 3/8" - 3"?​

    • D. What is the overall cost of spare parts?

    • E. How many total hours will you spend on repairs?

    • F. If you need 17 BF of material for 1 small table how many BF will you need to order?

    • G. If that material is cherry @ $6.00 a BF what will it cost?

    • H. How much money have you spent out of your budget? and How much money is left?

    • I. Can you pay yourself for your hours? If yes what are your wages?

 

Challenge #6

  1. Explain how you would cut the tenons for the stretchers on the bench project. 

  2. Make a BOM, including your hours, and write a script to make a sales pitch for the bench project. 
  3. Is the bench project something  you could stream line? Explain.

Challenge #7

  1. You have a project that is all square when it is in pieces. Put all together it is not square.
    1. List 3 things that could be causing the project to not be square.
    2. How would you adjust the project to be square? (3 sentences)
  2. You have a band saw that is continuously breaking blades in your shop.
    1. Name 3 things that could be causing the blade to break.
    2. How would you solve the issue to prevent further blades from breaking? (3 sentences)
  3. You need to order band saw blades for your shop. You have 1 bands saw that runs skip tooth 1/4" blades. 1 Band saw runs skip tooth 1/2" blades. The final band saw runs 1" blades. Blades need to be changed twice a month all 12 months. I
    1. How many blades will you need to order to make it through the year?​
    2. How much will it cost to order blades?
    3. Should you order extra blades? Why? (3 sentences)
    4. Explain how to change a band saw blade. (at least 3 steps)

  1. You car completing a veneering project for a client. The client wants a box that is 24" long, 6" wide, and 5" tall. He would like you to use all walnut. Complete the following:

    • BOM

    • Graph paper plan

  2. For the box:

    • 3/4" MDF paneling = $1.25 per SF

    • 1/4" paneling = $1.00 per SF

    • Walnut veneer = $2.45 per SF

    • Walnut edging = $8.50 per BF

  3. Complete the following questions: ​

    • How much will it cost to construct the box?​
    • Which joints will you use for this project?​
